That Evening
Whatever the black-haired woman did to my son, it saved his life. The healers brought him some medicine and gave me instructions as to his care. For the meantime, Heather has decided to take over his care until arrangement can be made for her to return to Flora. It is just as well, I suppose, since I will most likely be sending Enté with her. But it is late, and I am tired and have been through a cruel evening.
I am not in any state to be making such decisions now.
Sitting beside Enté, I rub my face and sigh, trying to stay awake and yet incapable of falling asleep either. My eyes slide to the door when there is a quiet knock, and it cracks open.
“Sire?” I give a grunt of a confirmation, and a courier steps quietly inside, watched by my guard as he approaches me with a stack of letters. “Shall I put them on your desk, sir?”
“No. Give them here,” I tell him and accept the letters from him before he gives a hurried bow and darts out of the room.
I flip through the envelopes, categorizing them from most important to least important to the 'I might throw you in the fire and pretend I never received you' category. My hands stop, however, when I come upon the last one. From Scarlet.
I sigh with relief, glad that she's not dead or too ill to even write. I look to Enté and smile quietly at his sleeping form. He will be happy to see her soon. I bet her appearance here will do much for his mood and his health, and hopefully he will do the same for her. Sighing, I break the seal and brighten the little lamp some so that I may read the letter.
